It may not feel like winter, but believe it or not, spring isn’t here until vernal equinox hits on March 20, or the Friday of finals week. As we head into the last stretch of winter quarter, keep your motivation high for finals and plan your calendar using Mojo’s top picks for spring SoCal electronic dance music concerts and festivals. (We’re not including Coachella, because that’s its own beast entirely.) Whether you’re staying through spring break or looking for something to do over Memorial Day weekend, we’ve got you covered. Also, check out the Spotify playlist below for a sample of some of the music to look forward to!
Simian Mobile Disco (March 19)
Sound Nightclub (21+)
If you finish finals early, celebrate by checking out Simian Mobile Disco at Sound Nightclub. An electronic duo hailing from the United Kingdom, they initially produced electro-house music but have since shifted to a more minimalist techno sound. Only a short Uber ride away in Hollywood, and with tickets at $20, it’s a low-investment jaunt for those who are into shows with an indie-electronic vibe.
Beyond Wonderland (March 20-21)
San Manuel Amphitheater (San Bernardino)
As an Insomniac event, Beyond Wonderland’s wide appeal among electronic music lovers and its coinciding with the end of finals week makes it the perfect way to kick off spring break with your squad of EDM-loving friends. With a two-day lineup including the likes of Dillon Francis, Tiësto and Knife Party and tickets still available, it’s not too late to organize a trip to San Bernardino for two full days of mainstream EDM-induced bliss.
Rave of Thrones (March 26)
Exchange Los Angeles (21+)
Largely being noted for its lovably gimmicky premise, Rave of Thrones features DJ Kristian Nairn, also known as Hodor in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” If you’re in town over the break and want to spend a night immersed in a sea of Khaleesi wannabes dancing to Nairn’s progressive house mixes, get your Game of Thrones outfit together and dance the night away in downtown Los Angeles for only $20.
Madeon (April 15)
El Rey Theatre
You may have heard his catchy remixes of Martin Solveig’s The Night Out and Deadmau5′s Raise Your Weapon, but this young French artist is about to drop a new album this year, and his original stuff is just as compelling, if not more. Though original tickets are sold out, try your luck on StubHub or with the UCLA “Free & For Sale” Facebook group for a pleasant evening of French electro-house. If you’re into softer EDM with a lyrical bent and less beat drops, Madeon is the DJ for you.
Lightning in a Bottle (May 21-25)
San Antonio Recreation Area (Bradley)
If you don’t already have plans for Memorial Day weekend, consider Lightning in a Bottle. With headlines like Flume and ODESZA, this four-day festival up in the Bay Area is a lot more artistic and outdoorsy than other EDM festival offerings coming up. Goldroom, who played at Ackerman Grand Ballroom last spring, is also on the lineup. If you’re in the mood for some more ethereal electronic music with vocals, a weekend camping in NorCal may be just the thing for you. Organize a trip with some friends and a car, as they offer both full four-day passes and weekend passes ($205).
