Spring Sing: Looking Back at Alanis Morissette’s Acceptance Speech

As the winter quarter winds down, students are beginning to look forward to what spring has to offer. This includes one of UCLA’s most popular events of the year, Spring Sing, which just released its lineup Friday.

Spring Sing is an event that not only allows students to showcase their artistic talents in front of their peers, but also to potentially expose themselves to recording companies or other higher powers. However, another perk to attending the show is the opportunity to be in the presence of a few celebrities. Last year’s show, for example, had special appearances by both Raven Symoné and Alanis Morissette. Don’t get me wrong, Raven was fantastic, but who could forget that awe-inspiring speech made by the unofficial queen of 90′s alternative rock?

In honor of the release of the lineup for Spring Sing 2015, Mojo takes a look back at an acceptance speech to remember.

Morissette was honored with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement during Spring Sing last year, prompting her to make a lengthy speech about the importance of, well, we’re still not quite sure.

She started off strong, first giving a few shout-outs to UCLA.

Then she continued on, explaining her love for the arts: “The ego, the storytelling …”

And then, she bust out the big guns: PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC NEUROBIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION.

Next she took a moment to list all of the various types of intelligence …

And finally, she gave us a few last thank-you’s, wished us well on our journeys, and reminded us that …

Thanks, Alanis. We love you too.

Top 5 Best Spring Sing Company Videos

Since Spring Sing is happening tonight, why not brush up on some classic Company pieces? For those of you who don’t know, Spring Sing Company (SSC for short) is the comedy group that performs between acts, and opens and closes the Spring Sing show every year. We compiled our five favorite Company videos here.

1. Spring Sing 2010 Opener.

There’s only one thing you should take from this hilarious spoof of “The Hangover”: No matter where you are today, or how thirsty you were on Thursday, go to Spring Sing 2013 or … you’re dead. Warning: There’s a high likelihood that you’ll get James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” stuck in your head after this watching video.

2. Spring Sing 2011: Club B-Cafe.

The “DOs and DON’Ts” of late nights on the Hill.

  • DON’T hit up that party … B-Cafe will satisfy your raging needs. They don’t even check your IDs.
  • DO use fantastic wordplays. “They call me milk ‘cause I’m steaming,” anyone?
  • DON’T lose control. There are no bathrooms at B-Cafe (thanks for the tip, SSC).
  • DO eat all of the “baaaagels.”
  • DO follow sexy European strangers. No danger here.
  • DO listen carefully. It took me two quarters of watching this video to figure out that the charming pigtail lady’s all-time fav B-Cafe dish was “ham and swiss.”
  • DO listen to this song at the gym. Best workout of your life.

3. Spring Sing 2012: UCLA VS. USC Rap Battle

“Live your life like you’ve got 19P” is perhaps the greatest mantra ever created. This video obviously deserves a place in our top five (and you’ll undoubtedly have the chorus stuck in your head for the next 24 hours).

4. Spring Sing 2010: “The Twilight Saga: Pawprint.”

It’s kind of unreal how much the actor parodying the character of Edward Cullen looks like Robert Pattinson. Also, “Pawprint” is a far better love story than Twilight. Fur-real.

5. Spring Sing 2012: Bruin Love Line

Of course, we had to include one of Company’s facetious live skits. The puns are all-inclusive, UCLA-specific, science-related and, of course, sexually charged (it’s college, after all). No wonder securing a spot in the elite Spring Sing Company is about as easy as finding a table in Powell during finals week.

Campus news

Tired students line up for Spring Sing tickets early in the morning

If you thought waking up for your 8 a.m. class was bad, think again.

Hundreds of students made the trek onto campus very early this morning to do what UCLA students do best: line up and wait to get tickets to a big event. Unlike last year, there were no tents involved this morning (No campouts were allowed, and there were security guards), just a lot of sleepy-eyed students squinting into the rising sun as they waited to buy tickets for Spring Sing 2013.

This Mojo reporter arrived at the Central Ticketing Office at exactly 7:26 a.m. Deciding to survey the extent of what appeared to be a very long line, she would arrive at the back of the line at 7:29 a.m. It was one very long line indeed.

Near several pairs of pajama pants, suits of cards and cups of coffee stood third-year ecology, behavior and evolution student Theresa Aller.

Aller said while she was excited about going to Spring Sing, she was tired from getting up at 6 a.m. to buy tickets for four of her friends.

“I was surprised by the line but I figured people would be here,” Aller said.

Around the corner, near the end of the line, was fifth-year computer science and engineering student Stanley Li.

Thinking the line wouldn’t be too bad, Li said he arrived only 25 minutes after 7 a.m., only to find himself at the back of the line.

“The way, way back of the line,” he added.

Graduating in June, Li said this will be his first time going to the Spring Sing, something he wants to do with his friends in his last year.

What time did you convince your friends to go line up for you this morning while you lay in bed? Were they successful in getting you tickets? Tweet us @dbmojo or comment below.
