Students line up to exchange canned food for tank tops

Turn in canned food, get a tank top? Deal.

A long line of students formed in Bruin Plaza today for a canned food drive hosted by the Student Alumni Association as part of the campus-wide “I <3 UCLA” week.

A total of 200 shirts were in stock,  said Danny Derbin, a fourth-year physiological sciences major and a member of the Student Alumni Association. The tank tops were white and bore the “I <3 UCLA” logo.

The cans will be stocked in the Food Closet, a space in the Student Activities Center where students who are hungry or homeless can find a meal.

The shirt was an extra incentive for Kelsey Whittels, a first-year engineering student standing in line.

Whittels said she was happy for the chance to donate to a canned food drive. She hasn’t had as many opportunities since leaving high school, she added.
