Nine Reasons Aahs!! is Your New Favorite Convenience Store

Located in the middle of Westwood Village, Aahs!! The Ultimate Gift Store is where many students find themselves in before costume parties or birthdays. This store is basically the Costco (minus the wholesale part) version of gift stores. You can find everything from everyday necessities like utensils, stationery and clothing items to random hoarding objects like heart-shaped rocks, finger puppets and glow-in-the-dark test tubes. Here are nine reasons why this superstore is your new favorite convenient store, despite its initial black hole impression.

Don’t believe us? Just watch (read).

1. You won’t ever have to awkwardly speak your mind.

… because these socks are doing the job for you. It’s even aided with visuals – a small child with a magical white horse in a field of flowers!

2. You’ll become dark and mysterious.

Have a dinner date at home? Bring out these suckers and you’ll have your date hooked. It’s basically stated in the instructions manual. It’ll be a great conversation starter or a quirky conversational transition: “Will you pass the white doll head please?”

3. You’ll become a romantic over night.

These three words have been idolized in society and especially Hollywood as being a big part of relationships. They mark your acceptance of not only your partner but also of yourself. This saying isn’t thrown around lightly, and that’s exactly why Aahs!! is here to help. Here’s a toast to your future endeavors!

4. Aahs!! is a fan of bacon.

If you don’t use bacon-flavored toothpicks after a residual meal, you’re doing life wrong.

5. It endorses adult throw blankets.

Aahs!! is here to provide what Snuggies never could do. Spiderman-print adult blanket throws. BRB – planning a Marvel Snuggie party.

6. You’ll be able to be a cat.*

*Magical cat with blue, starry eyes. This sleeping mask is for all the cat people out there.

7. You’ll be trendy. Jane Austen-trendy.

Everyone has gone through that mid-life crisis-esque situation where they can’t decide whether to get a “Mr. Darcy” tattoo or a silhouette of Jane Austen on their lower back. Don’t fret! Aahs!! has been incredibly considerate and provided these in stock. Good thing these tattoos are temporary so you don’t have to #commit. Your dreams have come true. You can finally have Austen’s favorite word, “imprudent,” and Mr. Darcy’s hat tattooed on your back.

8. No, like super trendy.

This gal is a Renaissance woman. From tattoos to Band-Aids, I personally would like to declare Jane Austen as my “woman-crush Wednesday.”

9. You’ll be the coolest kid on the block.

When was the last time you saw these on stands? Yeah, never. This is possibly the coolest item created ever since Ziploc bags. With this in your dorm, your floormates and RAs will be begging to hang out with you. Better start penciling in all those play dates!

Cancer Awareness: Facts about Lung, Pancreatic and Prostate Cancer

A lot of things happen in November. The color of the leaves change, the Starbucks red cups come back, elections are held and the Halloween decorations become Christmas decorations. Thanksgiving is prevalent in our thoughts, and the nation celebrates Peanut Butter Lovers Month. Amid the holiday spirit, we shouldn’t forget that November is also Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. To spread the awareness through social media, here are some facts about lung, pancreatic and prostate cancer, and what you can do to help.

Lung cancer

1. Lung cancer is still the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. More people die of lung cancer that those do by colon, breast and prostate cancer combined.

2. A nonsmoker’s chance of getting lung cancer can increase up to 20-30 percent if exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work.

3. More than 228,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. The survival rate is 35 percent when the cancer is detected early.

Pancreatic cancer

1. Pancreatic cancer is one of the few cancers that have not had a significant increase in survival rates over 40 years.

2. The average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease (the spreading of cancer from the original site to another location) ranges from three to six months, and 94 percent of victims will die within a five-year period.

3. Pancreatic cancer is hard to detect because there are no tools to catch it at its early stages when surgical removal is still a possibility.

Prostate cancer

1. In the United States, about one in seven men is diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.

2. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men in the U.S., behind lung cancer.

3. There are 2.5 million men alive today who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

With these facts in mind, it’s easy to help out on campus. Although we as UCLA students have limited options to help directly combat cancer, we can join clubs and promote awareness through the avenue we know best: social media. The American Cancer Society hosts Relay For Life on campus, an event in which hundreds of students come together to run on behalf of those who are fighting cancer or who have lost their battles.

Many clubs, sororities and fraternities hold charity events that donate to research funds and organizations. In addition, some of you may have noticed the Snapchat geotag the first day of November, which was an orange mustache. The “No-Shave November” trend, promoted by the Movember Foundation, is utilizing social media to get the word out about growing mustaches to increase awareness about men’s health. Awareness is nothing without action, so spread the word and get involved.

Welcome back, Birkenstocks

The oddly familiar cork-and-rubber-sole sandals, commonly dubbed as “ugly”, were once your dad’s go-to shoe back in the “dirty hippie” days. Yet, for some reason, these shoes are back in style and can be seen all over campus sported by your UCLA peers. Birkenstocks are back for good, and interestingly enough, people are labeling these shoes an essential for comfort in high fashion. So, as a proud owner myself, I’ve created a short list of some reasons why you should jump on the bandwagon (I promise, it’s worth it).

1. Personalized Comfortability

I bought my first pair this past August, and I remember immediately trying them on expecting them to be pillows for my feet. Boy, was I wrong. Breaking in a brand new pair of cork-and-rubber foot beds is painful (I still have the scars at the arches of my feet from the blisters I got.) But there is a reason for all this: The cork will slowly mold to your feet and create personalized imprints. It’s neat because for those who have flat feet like me, my Birkenstock molds provide me the much-needed support. It’s also pretty cool because if someone else wears your shoe, it won’t be as comfy or fitting to them. Oh, one more thing. You can even wear them with socks for the ultimate satisfaction. Might not be the cutest outfit, but hey, if you’re comfortable it’s all that matters, right?

2. In 20 years …

History repeats itself, and it seems fashion does too. Although Birkenstocks have been around since the early 1900s, the popularity of this brand of shoes reaches an apex every 20 years or so. Even though you weren’t the first person to start the trend this time, you can be at the top of your fashion game in the next 20 years if these do come back. Why? because you’ll have these shoes in the back of your closet, in pristine condition. The durability of the cork, rubber and leather will stand all types of weather and wear, and Birkenstocks are sturdy and comfortable enough to be worn all day, every day. There’s no question why your parents still wear theirs years later.

3. Versatility

Woke up a little too late for class? You can slip on your Birkenstocks. Can’t find shoes that are sleek enough for your leather leggings? You can wear your Birkenstocks. Going for a minimalistic look? Yup, you guessed it: You can wear your Birkenstocks. I’ve seen Birkenstocks on models for high fashion ads and have seen guys and girls pair these shoes with a trendy bohemian outfit. On the other hand, I’ve seen some girls on the UCLA soccer team sport these shoes after practice to give their feet a break. Moral of the story: Birkenstocks are the ultimate go-to shoe for your everyday needs.
